Your Life Purpose

Do you spend a lot of time feeling less than terrific, even though nothing is terribly wrong?  Not facing any distressing mental health symptoms or major problems yet find yourself regularly wondering “what’s the point?”  If your life feels like it has become one endless grind with little enthusiasm, these are indications of a critical void which only a clearly defined sense of purpose and meaning can fill.

Defining the mission and meaning of your life is the first step of my Success for Life Coaching model. Because your true purpose and the core values which emanate from it will guide every subsequent goal we work towards together, whether it be a change in your career, the way you use your free time or the foods you choose to put into your body. My own life mission statement is: “to use my gifts to connect, inspire, and create in the service of empowering others and myself to achieve high levels of consciousness and abundance.” We are taught from a very young age to conform our agendas to the needs and expectations of important others, as well as the rules of our society and culture. And while rule following and considering the needs of others is critical in a world where ‘no man exists as an island’, we can all become so focused on the external that we become alienated from ourselves.

Finding your purpose requires getting to know yourself deeply and intimately through the series of discussions and exercises inherent in the Success Coaching process.  In part, this involves developing greater conscious awareness of your core beliefs and assuming greater personal responsibility for the ways in which you create your life to manifest those beliefs. And for most it also entails connecting to some force greater than just yourself as to the universal principles common of all the world’s major religions. As you progressively reconnect to what is often called your “Higher Self” or Source, you will feel an increasing amount of passion, energy and fulfillment.  A lot like your near dead cell phone battery finally plugged into its charger!

The following is a life purpose coaching exercise by Jack Canfield, author of the megasuccessful series Chicken Soup for the Soul.  The coaching I received myself through Jack’s spiritually focused Law of Attraction program is what inspired me to become a certified coach.

Life Purpose Exercise, from Jack Canfield’s The Success Principles

  1. List two of your unique personal qualities, such as enthusiasm and creativity:
  2. List one or two ways you enjoy expressing those qualities when interacting with others, such as to support and to inspire.
  3. Assume the world is perfect right now.  What does this world look like?  How is everyone interacting with everyone else?  What does it feel like?  Write your answer as a statement, in the present tense, describing the ultimate condition, the perfect world as you see it and feel it.  Remember, a perfect world is a fun place to be.   EXAMPLE:  Everyone is freely expressing their own unique talents.  Everyone is working in harmony.  Everyone is expressing love.
  4. Combine the three prior subdivisions of this paragraph into a single statement. EXAMPLE: My purpose is to use my creativity and enthusiasm to support and inspire others to freely express their talents in a harmonious and loving way.
